The Union Army anchored their right flank on Culps Hill. On July 1st, the Twelfth Corps and parts of the First Corp fortified the hill with breastworks remnants which still can be seen today. On the second day, troops were moved from the lower flank of the hill to support the defense of Cemetery Ridge. When they returned to their positions, they found confederates in their works. The effort to take back that section of Culps Hill was the first of the fighting on July 3rd.
