East Cavalry Field
As part of his third day attack, Robert E Lee sent J.E. B. Stuart’s cavalry division to protect the left flank during Pickett’s Charge and if possible cross Baltimore Pike and get into the rear of the Union army. They were met three miles east of Gettysburg by three Union brigades including the newly formed Michigan Brigade led by George Armstrong Custer. The Union force was able to keep Stuart from reaching the Baltimore Pike.
