Gettysburg Auto Tour map provides you a basic tour through the Gettysburg National Military Park.  The free map shows the route route through the battlefield.  It starts with the first day’s fighting on McPherson Ridge. It ends at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery at Gettysburg.   There is a audio tour that is available on Amazon or at the Gettysburg Visitors Center.  The audio tour gives you an exciting battle details surrounding each of the tour stops.  When used with my photo galleries, you can tour the Gettysburg battlefield from home.

Licensed Guides

There are other options for touring the battlefield.  You can take a bus tour of the battlefield with a licensed battlefield guide.  You can also hire a guide to drive your vehicle through the battlefield for a up close personal experience.  The tour is for two hours and fees are based on the number of people in your vehicle.

The licensed guide program was started by the War Department in 1915.  Only licensed guides are allowed to take tours through the battlefield for a fee.  To become a guide, you have a pass extensive written and oral exams.  Only those who really know the Battle of Gettysburg are able to become licensed guides.

The Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides runs an academy to help those interested prepare for the exams.
