Meredith Avenue is a park that traces the line of monuments to the Union armies famed Iron Brigade. As Buford’s Cavalry fought a dealing action, the John Reynolds rushed his First Corps to the west of Gettysburg. As James Archer’s Brigade crossed Willoughby Run, Reynolds moved the Iron Brigade into line to face them. Soon, Reynolds was shot down from his horse, but the Iron Brigade overwhelmed Archer’s men capturing many including James Archer.
In the afternoon, once again Confederates crossed through these woods and attacked the First Corps line up on Reynolds Avenue, but this time after a hard fight and the collapse of the Union’s Eleventh Corps north of town, the Union line collapse and the day ended with a resounding southern victory.
