Taneytown Road

Taneytown Road was a key feature is allowing the Union army to quickly move troops and artillery to address both the second and third day attacks on Cemetery Ridge.  Running behind Cemetery Ridge and over the top of Cemetery Hill, Union troops could quickly move from one end of the union line along Cemetery Ridge hidden from Confederate view on Seminary Ridge.  On the second day, troops from the far right of the Union line traveled south on the Granite School House Road to the Taneytown Road near the center of the Union line along Cemetery Ridge than south on the Taneytown Road to the left of the line.
