The large open field to the east is where the last Confederate assault of the battle, known as “Pickett’s Charge,” occurred July 3. The original plan was to put the memorial on Cemetery Ridge. The Gettysburg Commission didn’t like the idea of a massive monument to the south on the ground Union troops held on the third day. They put in place a rule that all monuments had to be placed at the starting points of units. That put the Virginia Memorial and all other confederate memorials back on Seminary Ridge.
