Weikert Farm

George Weikert bought his 78 acre farm in 1852.   it sits just below the top of the southern section of Cemetery Ridge.   The farm was the scene of  heavy fighting during the second day when Longstreet’s’ attack strove to break the union line on Cemetery Ridge.  The 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the 6th Corps was rushed to the defense of this part of the line and pushed back the confederates.  Made up of only regiments from New Jersey, the New Jersey Brigade Monument is near by.  After the war, members of the brigade bought the farm to preserve the ground they had fought on.
